Self-Practice is Key

Self-practice is key
Engaging with your TRE® process can bring profound change

When first learning the TRE® exercises with a provider, either one to one or in a group setting, it can be easy to focus on doing it “right”, or wondering whether what is happening for you when you tremor is “normal”.

This is understandable when learning something new. It is also a good starting point. Going slowly and being deliberate about the exercises is a great foundation. Normalising the tremors is also really helpful too, however they appear in your body. Remember they are a normal inherent part of us and a natural part of our relaxation mechanism that helps to down regulate our nervous system, to a more calm and balanced state.

But what happens when you start to practice without a provider? Self-practice allows us to meet what is there, stored or locked in our body. Noticing what sensations you experience in your body, what thoughts you have and how this makes you “feel”, are key to your process. These moments help us unlock patterns of stress and tension in our body.

As well as noticing what happens when we are tremoring, it can be really important to discover what comes up when we pause or stop tremoring, the moments in between. This can be really key to discovering how the tremors can help our baseline state of mind. Looking back, I remember how the moments in between my tremors gave me a sense of deep calm and a connectedness to my body in a way that I had never felt before. This gave me a sense of safety, being so in touch with my bodily sensations.

So my advise to anyone who has practiced TRE®, either one to one or in a group, is to explore your self-practice and see what you meet. Be gentle, compassionate and as always, go slowly and really notice the change it can bring.

And if you want to explore more with me, I have a few different group sessions I am facilitating in the Autumn and the New Year and offer one-to-one sessions too.

With love, Tom
